Defines key words used in laws about Native Hawaiian education and related groups. Community consultation is a public meeting to talk about Native Hawaiian education issues that the public is told about at least 30 days in advance. Native Hawaiian is a U.S. citizen who descends from the people who, before 1778, lived in and had sovereignty over what is now the State of Hawaii, shown by family records, elder or long-time resident verification (Kupuna or Kamaaina), or certified birth records. Native Hawaiian community-based organization is a local group mostly made up of Native Hawaiians that helps their community’s social, cultural, and educational life. Native Hawaiian educational organization is a private nonprofit that serves Native Hawaiians, has Native Hawaiians in leadership, centers Hawaiian values and culture, and has proven experience educating Native Hawaiian youth and doing research or program development. Native Hawaiian language is the one Native American language native to Hawaii’s original people. Native Hawaiian organization is a private nonprofit that serves Native Hawaiians, has Native Hawaiians in leadership, and is recognized by the Governor of Hawaii to plan or run programs for Native Hawaiians. Office of Hawaiian Affairs is the office created by the Constitution of the State of Hawaii.
