The Board may accept gifts of property for the National Portrait Gallery. Ownership of property held for the Gallery (except property that belongs to the United States) is vested in the Smithsonian Institution. Unless the law or a gift’s rules say otherwise, the Board may sell, trade, dispose of, invest in, reinvest, or buy property for the benefit of the Gallery.
