Title 20 › Chapter CHAPTER 3— - SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION, NATIONAL MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER XV— - CIVIL RIGHTS HISTORY PROJECT › § 80s
Creates a new federally funded national project to gather video and audio interviews from people who took part in the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The project must build on earlier documentary work, coordinate efforts across the country, and help local groups preserve and share these personal stories. The goal is to save first-hand memories—from well-known leaders to lesser-known participants—about protests, rides, sit-ins, marches, and voting-rights efforts so future generations can hear directly from eyewitnesses. The Library of Congress and the Smithsonian will collect, keep, and make the recordings available to the public.
