Title 21 › Chapter CHAPTER 9— - FEDERAL FOOD, DRUG, AND COSMETIC ACT › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER X— - MISCELLANEOUS › § 399e
The Secretary of Health and Human Services must step up work to learn more about nanomaterials that are in, or might be put into, products the Food and Drug Administration regulates. That work must focus on possible harmful effects, possible medical benefits, how these materials affect living systems, and how they interact with biological systems. "Secretary" means the Secretary of Health and Human Services. The Secretary may review scientific studies and data; work with other federal agencies to build databases and models about how groups of nanomaterials behave; support FDA programs and joint research on toxic properties and ways to find and measure nanomaterials; collect, analyze, and share scientific information; build FDA lab and field expertise and provide ongoing training; encourage national and international standards efforts; and take other related actions needed to carry out these goals.
