Title 21 › Chapter CHAPTER 12— - MEAT INSPECTION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IV— - AUXILIARY PROVISIONS › § 672
An authorized official may hold (detain) carcasses, parts, meat, meat products, certain exempt products, or any dead, dying, disabled, or sick livestock (like cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, horses, or other equines) when found where they are kept for sale or distribution. If there is reason to think the item is contaminated, wrongly labeled, not inspected as required, or being distributed illegally, the official can detain it for up to 20 days while they decide what to do or notify other government authorities. The item cannot be moved from where it was found until the official releases it. Official inspection marks may have to be removed before release unless the Secretary agrees they can stay.
