Title 22 › Chapter CHAPTER 23— - PROTECTION OF CITIZENS ABROAD › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - HOSTAGE RECOVERY AND HOSTAGE-TAKING ACCOUNTABILITY › § 1741c–2
The Secretary of State must work with the Secretary of Homeland Security, other federal agencies, the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, and the Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs to make and share warnings for U.S. citizens about the risk of wrongful or unlawful detention or hostage-taking in covered countries. These warnings must appear at U.S. international airports and on relevant government websites and can include posters, brochures, web banners, verbal airport notices, and other methods. The State Department must also work with U.S. airlines so people booking flights to those countries receive warnings. No later than one year after December 23, 2024, the Secretary must send Congress a report on the steps taken, efforts to make travel advisories more visible, and any other recommendations to improve awareness. Covered country means a country whose State Department travel advisory includes either the "K—Kidnapping or Hostage Taking" or "D—Wrongful Detention" risk indicator.
