When a major disaster or incident abroad affects the health or safety of U.S. citizens living or traveling there, the Secretary of State must quickly notify their family members with all relevant information. Notice should use the fastest methods available, like phone calls, and include timely written follow-up. The State Department will be the main source of up-to-date information and will help arrange things like working with foreign officials and U.S. airlines to prepare and transport remains and handle personal estates under section 2715c. consular officer — any U.S. citizen employee of the State Department who is designated to perform consular duties.
