Within 120 days after March 15, 2022, the Bureau must start a program to accept tribal prisoners. Tribes must ask Attorney General for each transfer; AG must decide within 30 days. Only violent crimes comparable to 18 U.S.C. 1153(a) with one‑year or longer terms qualify. Prisoners held under 18 U.S.C. 5003 are housed in the nearest federal prison at U.S. expense, with no more than 100 at once. A tribe can cancel anytime; the offender returns to tribal custody. If demand exceeds 100, the Bureau must notify Congress.
