Title 25 › Chapter CHAPTER 18— - INDIAN HEALTH CARE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - INDIAN HEALTH PROFESSIONAL PERSONNEL › § 1616o
The Secretary may give a grant to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine (USDSM) to start a pilot program at one or more Indian reservation service units in South Dakota. The program’s goals are to give medical students and residents hands-on clinical experience at reservation sites, to improve health care for Indian people by making sure qualified professionals are available, and to offer learning and research chances for doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and other health workers using regional academic resources. The program must have an advisory board with local tribal and community representatives. It will be treated as an extension of the USDSM campus, with students supervised by qualified medical staff who are USDSM faculty. USDSM must work with nearby medical and nursing schools, tribal colleges, and other health programs, and with the Service to create more professional opportunities to help recruit and keep health workers in the Aberdeen Area.
