The Secretary, through the Service and after talking with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can give grants to Indian tribes and tribal organizations to prevent, control, and eliminate communicable and infectious diseases. Grants can fund projects for disease control (for example tuberculosis, hepatitis, HIV, RSV, hantavirus, STDs, and H. pylori), public education, training for health workers, and hepatitis C screening, treatment, and prevention projects. Applications are required to get money. Tribal recipients are encouraged to work with the CDC and state or local health agencies. If asked, the Secretary can provide technical help. The Secretary must report to Congress every two years on how the funds were used and the progress made.
