Summary

Federal agencies and museums must prepare a short, written summary of any Native American unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects, or cultural patrimony they hold. The summary must say how big the collection is, what kinds of items are included, where they came from, how and when they were obtained, and the cultural group if known. It can replace an item-by-item inventory and must be followed by talks with tribal governments, Native Hawaiian organizations, and traditional religious leaders. It must be finished no later than 3 years after November 16, 1990. On request, Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations must be allowed to see records, catalogues, studies, and other relevant data to learn an object's geographic origin, cultural affiliation, and basic acquisition facts. The information must be provided in a reasonable way agreed to by the parties.
