Money owed to Native American children from the sale of tribal or ceded land that was kept back from their parents or guardians and held in the U.S. Treasury must earn interest at 3% per year, unless a different rate is set. The Treasury must pay that interest on unpaid amounts that the Interior Department certifies are due, starting from when the tribe’s per-person distribution was made.
