A disbursing agent in the Indian Service can, with the Commissioner of Indian Affairs' approval, let a clerk in his office take over and do all duties when the agent is absent, disabled, or otherwise unable to serve. While acting in that role, the clerk has the same duties and can face the same penalties for official misconduct as the disbursing agent.
