Title 25 › Chapter CHAPTER 46— - INDIAN SELF-DETERMINATION AND EDUCATION ASSISTANCE › § 5310
Starting on December 8, 2004, Indian tribes, tribal organizations, and tribal consortia that get advance payments from the Department of the Interior under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act or the Tribally Controlled Schools Act may invest that money before they spend it on their grant, compact, or annual funding agreement. They can only put the money into safe U.S.-backed options: U.S. government securities, securities guaranteed or insured by the U.S., mutual funds registered with the SEC that invest only in those U.S.-backed securities, or bank accounts that are federally insured or fully collateralized so the funds are protected even if the bank fails.
