Summary

Estate tax returns must be filed within 9 months after a person dies. Gift tax returns must be filed by April 15 after the year the gifts were made. If you get an extension to file your income tax return for that calendar year, it also extends the gift tax return. If the gift-giver dies that year, the gift return is due no later than the estate tax return deadline, including any extensions.
