Title 26 › Subtitle Subtitle A— - Income Taxes › Chapter CHAPTER 1— - NORMAL TAXES AND SURTAXES › Subchapter Subchapter N— - Tax Based on Income From Sources Within or Without the United States › Part PART III— - INCOME FROM SOURCES WITHOUT THE UNITED STATES › Subpart Subpart D— - Possessions of the United States › § 933
If you live in Puerto Rico for the whole tax year, money you get from Puerto Rico sources does not count as federal taxable income, except pay you receive for work as a U.S. government employee. You cannot take deductions or tax credits against that excluded income, except the personal exemption under section 151. The same rule applies to U.S. citizens who were bona fide residents of Puerto Rico for at least 2 years before they moved away, for the income earned while they lived there.
