The Supreme Court can appoint a marshal. The Court can remove the marshal and set the marshal’s pay. With the Chief Justice’s approval, the marshal may hire needed assistants, employees who help the Court, and custodial staff and set their pay. The marshal must attend Court sessions, carry out orders and legal papers from the Court, and take care of federal property used by the Court or its members. The marshal must pay bills for work on the Court building when the Architect of the Capitol certifies them, pay for books and their repairs when the court librarian certifies the bills, pay salaries of the Chief Justice, associate justices, and Court staff under the Chief Justice’s direction, pay printing and travel costs for lawyers allowed to appear for free when the clerk certifies those bills, and oversee the Supreme Court Police.
