Gives short meanings for the main words used in the chapter. Secretary is the Secretary of Labor. Commission is the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. Commerce covers trade, traffic, transportation, or communication between states, between a state and places outside it, inside the District of Columbia, in U.S. possessions (except the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands), or between points in the same state if travel goes outside that state. Person is any individual or organized business group, like partnerships, corporations, trusts, associations, or legal representatives. Employer is a person running a business that affects commerce who has employees, but not the United States (the United States Postal Service is included) or state or local governments. Employee is someone who works for such an employer in a business that affects commerce. State includes any U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Occupational safety and health standard is a rule that requires conditions or practices to keep work and workplaces safe and healthy. National consensus standard is an occupational safety and health standard made by a recognized national standards group after broad agreement, an opportunity for different views, and designation by the Secretary after consulting other federal agencies. Established Federal standard is any operative occupational safety and health standard set by a U.S. agency now in effect, or included in a law in force on December 29, 1970. Committee is the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health. Director is the Director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Institute is the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Workmen’s Compensation Commission is the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws.
