Says the United States will need a wider mix and much more electricity, natural gas, and transportation fuels to become more energy independent. A National Research Council report estimates U.S. methane hydrate resources at about 200,000 trillion cubic feet, and another report says the U.S. may hold over one-fourth of the world’s methane hydrate deposits. The Energy Information Administration expects a natural gas shortfall in or about 2020, and the National Academy of Sciences says methane hydrate could help reduce that shortfall.
