When doing investigations under sections 1, 3, and 5–7, the Director and any member of the United States Bureau of Mines must not have a personal or private interest in a mine or its products that is being investigated. They also must not take a job from a private party to inspect a mine or to write reports about a mine’s value or how it is run. The Bureau may temporarily hire outside engineers or experts as consultants or to study special topics, as long as those people mainly work outside the Bureau and are paid no more than $10 per day.
