When a chief disbursing official or director dies, resigns, or leaves office, the deputy the Treasury Secretary names may use the former official's name to handle accounts and payments until the last day of the second month after leaving. Accounts and payments must be reviewed and settled as the law requires, and the Treasury must honor checks signed in that name. Only that deputy is responsible for those actions.
