The Treasury Secretary can set reasonable manufacturing tolerances for the dollar, half dollar, quarter, and dime coin specifications, except where the specifications are fixed limits. The 5-cent coin’s weight may vary by no more than 0.194 gram. The 1-cent coin’s weight may vary by no more than 0.13 gram. Any gold coin must contain the full weight of gold shown on the coin. The Secretary must keep a record of the kind, number, and weight of each batch of coins made and must test samples to check weight. If the tested coins do not meet the required weight, the Secretary must either weigh each coin and mark and melt those that fail into bars for reminting, or may remelt the whole batch.
