Defines key words used in this part. "Dependent child" means an unmarried child (including stepchildren and adopted children) who is either under 18, or cannot support themselves because of a physical or mental disability, or is between 18 and 22 and is a full‑time student living at a recognized school. If the child’s 22nd birthday falls before July 1 or after August 31 while they are still studying, they are treated as turning 22 on the next July 1. "Surviving spouse" means the widow or widower of a Comptroller General or retired Comptroller General who either was married to that person for at least 1 year immediately before the death, or has not remarried before age 55 and is a parent of children from that marriage. "Service as a Comptroller General" means the count of whole years and complete months a person served as Comptroller General.
