When the Eads contract ends, the Secretary of the Army must take charge of the South Pass channel, its jetties, and related works and keep the channel maintained. He may draw needed funds from the U.S. Treasury up to $100,000 a year, and may use available government dredges. For surveys and examinations, if the Chief of Engineers asks, the Secretary may get up to $10,000 a year from the Treasury.
