Title 33 › Chapter CHAPTER 15— - FLOOD CONTROL › § 701i
The Chief of Engineers can change a levee or flood-wall project to leave out part or all of an area if doing so would cut construction costs a lot. The area left out would no longer get protection from that project. A sum not much larger than the money saved may be used by the Chief, or given to another federal agency, to pay for moving people out of the removed area and helping them recover. The Chief can also make agreements with States, local agencies, or the people affected to carry out the move and recovery, and repay them from that sum for the expenses they actually incur.
