Law enforcement agencies or groups that get a grant must use the money to start or improve training and support programs for officers. They must provide at least one of six types of services, including counseling for officers and family members, 24-hour child care, marital and teen support groups, research-backed programs to cut stress and prevent suicide, stress education for new recruits and families, or technical help and training to run these services. They may also offer any of 11 additional services, for example post-shooting debriefs, group therapy, hypertension clinics, 24-hour critical-incident response, 24-hour family crisis and suicide-prevention phone lines, counseling for infectious-exposure or peers, support for families of officers killed or seriously hurt on duty, seminars on substance and behavior issues, specialized mental-health training, and related technical assistance.
