The Attorney General can set up Rural Crime and Drug Enforcement Task Forces in federal districts that cover large rural areas after talking with governors, mayors, and local law enforcement leaders. Property or money seized in investigations started by these task forces and forfeited under federal law must be used mainly to support the task forces and the state and local agencies that join them, following the Attorney General’s and Treasury’s rules on sharing seized assets. These task forces must follow policies the Attorney General creates. The Attorney General can deputize state and local officers and can cross-designate up to 100 federal officers when needed to investigate certain drug crimes under section 873(a) of title 21 or crimes under title 18 that carry 10 years or more in prison. The teams must include state and local law enforcement, the U.S. Attorney’s office, and the FBI, DEA, INS, and U.S. Marshals Service, and may include other federal agencies such as Customs, Park Police, Forest Service, ATF, and BLM.
