Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle I— - Comprehensive Acts › Chapter CHAPTER 121— - VIOLENT CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER VII— - POLICE CORPS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TRAINING AND EDUCATION › Part Part A— - Police Corps › § 12555
The Director can give scholarships or reimbursements to students who agree to work in a State or local police force under a written agreement. Each academic year the award cannot be more than $10,000 or the student’s actual school costs. If the student studies for almost a whole calendar year, the yearly limit is $13,333. No student can get more than $40,000 total. Payments go straight to the school. The school must give any leftover money to the student after paying tuition, fees, and room and board. Scholarships are for attending a 4-year college, but they can also pay for graduate or professional study. The Director may reimburse earlier costs if the student joined the program after transferring into a 4‑year school. Every recipient must sign an agreement. The student must finish the required degree, complete Police Corps training and be certified by the Director, then work 4 years for a State or local police force without being fired for cause. If the student breaks these rules, they must repay the money plus 10 percent interest. Repayment won’t be required if the student dies or becomes permanently and totally disabled. The Director may replace repayment with community service for disability or good cause and will seek repayment quickly from anyone who violates the agreement. Applicants must apply in the form the Director requires.
