Summary

The Director may give grants to state, tribal, and local prosecutors, police, courts, jails, prisons, and qualified public or private groups. The money is for creating and running modern systems that quickly tell crime victims about important dates and events in criminal cases. To qualify, the area must have laws like those in chapter 237 of title 18. The systems can connect to a recipient’s existing case‑management software. Congress set aside $5,000,000 for fiscal year 2005 and $5,000,000 for each fiscal year 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Funds recovered under the False Claims Act (31 U.S.C. 3729–3731) may also be used for these grants if Congress approves.
