Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle II— - Protection of Children and Other Persons › Chapter CHAPTER 209— - CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFETY › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - SEX OFFENDER REGISTRATION AND NOTIFICATION › Part Part A— - Sex Offender Registration and Notification › § 20913
Sex offenders must register and keep their registration up to date in every place they live, every place they work, and every place they go to school. For the first time they register, they must also register in the place where they were convicted if that place is different from where they live. They must register before finishing any prison sentence for the crime, or within 3 business days after sentencing if they are not sent to prison. Within 3 business days of changing their name, address, job, or student status, they must appear in person in at least one of those places and give the new information. That place must immediately send the updated info to the other places where the person must register. The Attorney General can set rules about how these requirements apply to people convicted before the law took effect or who cannot meet the initial deadlines. Every jurisdiction, except federally recognized Indian tribes, must make failing to register a crime punishable by more than 1 year in prison.
