Title 34 › Subtitle Subtitle IV— - Criminal Records and Information › Chapter CHAPTER 407— - DNA IDENTIFICATION › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - TRAINING, TECHNOLOGY, RESEARCH, AND EXPANDED USE › § 40725
The Attorney General must create a National Forensic Science Commission by naming members who know forensic science and criminal justice. The Commission must check the forensic field’s current and future needs, recommend ways to use and improve forensic technology, spot helpful scientific advances, suggest programs to train more forensic scientists, and share best practices through the National Institute of Justice. It must also review DNA privacy laws and practices and recommend steps to protect DNA data, including proper use, accuracy and security, timely removal or destruction of outdated or wrong DNA records, and any other needed privacy safeguards. It will also act as a forum for sharing ideas and can study other forensic issues the Attorney General asks it to look at. The Attorney General must pick a chair from the Commission members, provide staff help, and set up how the Commission will operate. Congress authorized $500,000 for each of fiscal years 2005 through 2009 to support this work.
