The corporation must follow the purposes listed in its articles of incorporation. It exists to keep alive the memory of Union soldiers from the Civil War and to honor their loyalty and sacrifice. Its work includes six main activities: protecting Civil War sites and monuments; building and running a free public Civil War museum in Springfield, Illinois; keeping a public library attached to the museum with official records, genealogies, reports, service files, letters, diaries, and relics; teaching American history through scholarships, flag presentations, and contests; helping veterans by volunteering in VA centers and state homes; and working with other history and veterans groups. It must act as a veterans’ and patriotic organization under the laws of each State where it is incorporated.
