Summary

The foundation can set up its own rules, use an official seal, and take whatever steps it needs to do its work. Under D.C. law it has the usual corporate powers for managing assets: it can accept and manage gifts and bequests, buy, sell, lease, or invest in property, borrow money, make contracts with public or private groups, sue and be sued, and take other actions needed to meet its goals. The foundation may accept gifts even if they have restrictions or other people’s interests, as long as some present or future benefit goes to the foundation. Starting in 2003, it may each year hold a conference in the Washington, D.C. area to honor secondary school students and others who have served or plan to serve as poll workers and who joined its programs.
