When a naval ship is lost and the pay officer’s records are destroyed, that officer’s last monthly report can be used to settle pay for people aboard who are not officers, unless other official proof shows otherwise. If there is no report, accounts are settled fairly. The Secretary can set the ship’s date of loss. Crew separated by the wreck who, by court-martial, court of inquiry, or other satisfactory evidence, are shown to have tried to save the ship and to have behaved properly keep getting pay until discharge or death.
