Title 38 › Part PART II— - GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter CHAPTER 11— - COMPENSATION FOR SERVICE-CONNECTED DISABILITY OR DEATH › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IV— - PEACETIME DISABILITY COMPENSATION › § 1133
If a veteran served at least six months and gets a tropical disease (or a disorder from treatment or prevention for one), it will be treated as caused by active military, naval, air, or space service if the disease shows up within one year after leaving service or if medical sources say it began during service. If clear proof shows the disease began before or after service, it will not be treated as service-related. This rule also does not stop a veteran from getting service connection if good evidence shows the disease was caused or made worse by service.
