Title 38 › Part PART II— - GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter CHAPTER 17— - HOSPITAL, NURSING HOME, DOMICILIARY, AND MEDICAL CARE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - GENERAL › § 1708
The Secretary may provide short-term housing in Fisher Houses or other suitable places when a veteran has to travel far for medical exams, treatment, care, or certain VA benefits. The housing can be given to the veteran and to family members or others who travel with the veteran and give similar support. A Fisher House is a short-stay home near a VA medical center that was built and donated by the Zachary and Elizabeth M. Fisher Armed Services Foundation. The Secretary can charge for the housing and the money goes into the medical services account to be used for lodging. The Secretary must make rules that limit stay length, set fee rules, define who counts as an accompanying person, set use rules for the housing, and add any other limits, conditions, or priorities needed.
