Title 38 › Part PART II— - GENERAL BENEFITS › Chapter CHAPTER 19— - INSURANCE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - NATIONAL SERVICE LIFE INSURANCE › § 1918
A named beneficiary can give all or part of what they would get to a widow, widower, child, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, brother, or sister. If there is a backup (contingent) beneficiary, that person must also sign. The assignment must be given to the Secretary before any payments start. If the interest is an annuity, payments after assignment must be equal monthly amounts in a multiple of 12 near the annuity’s set number of payments, or 240 payments, whichever is less. This part does not apply to insurance maturing after July 26, 1962. For insurance maturing after July 26, 1962 (except insurance under section 1922(b)), the person who will get the money may assign all or part to the same family members when the contingent beneficiary signs. If the insurance is paid in one lump sum, that signature is not required.
