Summary

Within 90 days after August 10, 2022, the VA must add a toxic-exposure screening to the health check for veterans who are enrolled in the VA annual patient system. Veterans must take the screening at least once every five years. The VA will pick the questions with help from medical experts. The screening must at least ask about open burn pit exposure and other toxic exposures common to military service. An open burn pit is an area the Secretary of Defense designates to burn solid waste outdoors that does not have a commercial incinerator or other purpose-built burning equipment. Printed handouts about the screening and resources must be at every VA medical center. The VA must review the screening at least every two years.
