Defines common words used in the chapter. Radiation means ionizing or nonionizing rays above normal background levels, like those from medical or dental imaging. Radiologic procedure means a test or item used to diagnose or treat disease or dental conditions (for example, X-rays or nuclear medicine). Radiologic equipment means machines that give off or detect radiation for diagnosis or treatment. Practitioner means a licensed MD, DO, dentist, podiatrist, or chiropractor who prescribes such procedures. Persons who administer radiologic procedures means non‑practitioners who intentionally give medical radiation, such as radiologic and nuclear medicine technologists and dental hygienists or assistants. Secretary means the Secretary of Health and Human Services. State means the several States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.
