The head of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) must do or pay for research about what services best help people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their families. Within 6 months after November 14, 1986, the CMS head must send a research plan to the Chairman of the Council. The plan must say what services let people stay at home or in the community, how much those services cost and who pays, whether Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance are adequate, and what those programs would pay. Within one year after sending the plan, and every year after that, the CMS head must send any updates they think are needed. In making and updating the plan, the CMS head must consult with the Chairman of the Council and the leaders of agencies in the Department.
