The Secretary must run a program to study and improve natural gas and other alternative fuel vehicle technology. The work covers 15 technical areas, such as fuel injection and carburetion, manifolding and combustion, power and efficiency, lubricants and engine durability, ignition and additives, multifuel engines, emissions control and catalysts, gas compression, storage and fueling systems, and use of advanced materials. The Secretary may make cooperative agreements and give money to public or private groups that agree to pay 50 percent of a project's cost. alternative fuel vehicle — a vehicle that runs on alternative fuels. motor vehicle — any automobile, truck, bus, van, or other on‑road or off‑road motor vehicle, including a boat.
