§15971 Integrated coal/renewable energy system

Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 149— - NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY AND PROGRAMS › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER IV— - COAL › Part Part B— - Clean Power Projects › § 15971

Summary

The Secretary may offer loan guarantees, if money is available, for projects that make power from low‑energy coal (less than 7,000 Btu per pound) using advanced integrated gasification combined cycle technology, including updating existing plants. The project must be paired with wind and other renewables, reduce and have the potential to store carbon dioxide, and provide hydrogen nearby for fuel cell demonstrations. The plant can be built in stages, must total at least 200 megawatts with improving cost performance, and must be in the Upper Great Plains. The technical rules in section 15962(b) apply. Getting a loan guarantee does not stop the project from receiving investment tax credits under section 48A of title 26, and using those credits does not block other clean coal program funding.
