Summary

The Secretary must speed up work to make diesel engines and their pollution-control systems better. The goals are to develop and show diesel technologies that, by 2010, meet Tier 2 standards and the heavy-duty 2007 emissions limits that were in EPA rules as of August 8, 2005. The Secretary must also develop the next generation of cleaner, more efficient diesel engines, including technologies like homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI). Tier 2 emission standards — EPA rules issued February 10, 2000 for passenger cars, light trucks, and larger passenger vehicles made after the 2003 model year.
