The Secretary must run research, development, demonstration, and commercial programs to make distributed energy resources and systems more reliable and efficient. The work must help link advanced energy technologies to the power grid and improve grid reliability. Congress authorized funding for these efforts: $240,000,000 for fiscal year 2007, $255,000,000 for fiscal year 2008, and $273,000,000 for fiscal year 2009. Congress may also provide whatever funds are needed for the Power Delivery Research Initiative for each of 2007–2009. From the funds above, $20,000,000 for each of 2007 and 2008 must go to activities under section 16213, and $2,000,000 for 2007 must go to activities under section 16215(g).
