No claim for legal or other services tied to a compensation award under subchapter I is valid unless the Secretary approves it. If the Secretary approves a claim, the Secretary will decide how and how much of the fee is paid from the claimant’s compensation. Anyone who takes a fee, payment, or tip for such services without that approval, or who solicits work on these claims, commits a misdemeanor and can be fined up to $1,000, jailed up to one year, or both.
