The federal share of project costs must follow section 16352. The Secretary of Energy must work with other DOE research programs (like drilling and subsurface work) and consult federal land management agencies when picking projects. The programs cannot change laws about how federal lands are managed or protected. The Secretary must fund education and outreach about geothermal energy, including activities at the Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy, and give technical help to eligible groups to move geothermal advances into commercial use, including work for rural, Tribal, and low-income communities. Not later than 1 year after December 27, 2020, and every 2 years after that, the Secretary must report project results to the House Science and Technology Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Every 5 years after December 27, 2020, the Secretary must also report to those committees on advanced concepts and technologies to maximize U.S. geothermal resources.
