The Director must set up a research program to develop very powerful lasers, following advice from a National Academies report and a Brightest Light Initiative workshop report. The work must include petawatt-scale and high average power laser technologies, support a network of university and national lab laser facilities, and use new laser tech to make smaller, simpler, and cheaper accelerator systems for science. The Director must coordinate this work across the Office of Science. The Under Secretary for Science must work with other Department programs and federal agencies. Authorized funding: $50,000,000 for FY2023; $100,000,000 for FY2024; $150,000,000 for FY2025; $200,000,000 for FY2026; and $250,000,000 for FY2027.
