Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 22— - INDIAN HOSPITALS AND HEALTH FACILITIES › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER I— - MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION › § 2001
Gives the Surgeon General and the U.S. Public Health Service control of hospitals and health services for Indian people, taking that job away from the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, with oversight by the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Hospitals already serving a particular tribe cannot be closed before July 1, 1956, unless the tribe’s governing council agrees. Allows the Secretary of Health and Human Services, if the Indian people served agree, to hire private or other non‑Federal health agencies to provide care. Payment can be by fee‑for‑service, prepayment, or similar arrangements.
