Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 6A— - PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER II— - GENERAL POWERS AND DUTIES › Part Part P— - Additional Programs › § 280g–2
The Secretary, working with the CDC and NIH, must study environmental and other causes of childhood cancers (for example, bone cancers, leukemia, brain tumors, lymphomas, soft tissue sarcomas, and other malignant tumors) and run projects to improve care and outcomes for children with these cancers and related problems like limb loss, anemia, rehabilitation needs, and palliative care. These projects can be done directly or by giving grants or contracts. The work must expand national data and surveillance on childhood cancers, create a uniform system for doctors, hospitals, clinics, and States to report diagnoses and related epidemiology, and support the National Limb Loss Information Center to help prevent or reduce disability. The Secretary must coordinate with other Public Health Service agencies. “Childhood cancer” covers many different kinds of tumors and the Secretary may update that definition. Money may be appropriated as needed for fiscal years 2001 through 2005.
