Title 42 › Chapter CHAPTER 6A— - PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE › Subchapter SUBCHAPTER III— - NATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES › Part Part B— - General Provisions Respecting National Research Institutes › § 284l
The Director of the National Institutes of Health must give four kinds of grants to train and support people who do patient-focused clinical research. First, "Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Awards" pay salary and other support for early-career clinical investigators to work under supervision at centers or institutions with the right resources; individual scientists apply when the Director asks. Second, "Mid-Career Investigator Awards in Patient-Oriented Research" fund mid-career clinicians so they can spend time on clinical research and mentor newer investigators; individual scientists apply when the Director requires. Third, "Graduate Training in Clinical Investigation Awards" support individuals pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. in clinical investigation for terms of 2 years or more, paying stipend, tuition, and institutional support; these programs teach topics like analytic methods/biostatistics, clinical pharmacology, epidemiology, data management, ethics/regulatory issues, and biomedical writing; individual scientists apply. Fourth, "Clinical Research Curriculum Awards" go to institutions or consortia to create core training programs (including for medical students) in similar topics; one application per institution; grants last up to 5 years and may be renewed.
